Curator’s talk: The historic roots and current themes in Burmese contemporary art.
Saturday, Sept 20th. 4 – 4:45 pm
With Burma largely cut off from the west during the last 50 years, the local art scene became the “Galapagos Island” of the art world, evolving in isolation and in its own directions. Now, with the improving political environment, art lovers are once again being captivated by the remarkable artistic talent that exists in this fascinating county.
The East Gallery, in conjunction with Fragrant Wood Gallery, are pleased to present a group exhibition featuring eight leading, internationally-established painters who are working in Burma today. The show will include:
• Than Kyaw Htay’s sweeping, rich and colourful Shan State-inspired landscapes.• Yan Naing Tun’s politically-themed monochromatic city-scenes.
• Contemporary Buddha portraits by award-winning painter Khin Zaw Latt .
• S. Moe Z.’s iconic black and red monk and ethnic minority paintings.
• Nann Nann’s Buddhist-inspired symbolic and conceptual gold-leaf and acrylic works.
• Recent works by Min Zaw which draw on, and contemporize, ancient Burmese painting traditions while at the same time injecting political and social commentary into the composition.
• Moe Nyo’s distinctive and meticulous watercolours, which combine and offset splashes of greenery with classical architectural.
• Kyaw Soe’s work which uses a vibrant palette to portray a rich, seemingly irrepressible, tapestry of vegetation thereby creating an atmosphere of intense fertility and spiritual optimism.
