Heng Ravuth (Cambodia)
Heng Ravuth (b. 1983, Phnom Penh) explores potentials of self-portraiture in photography and painting. His photographic serial work, some of which The East Gallery has exhibited, reflects on identity, maleness, humanness, privacy, and voyeurism.
The “Innermost” series, 3 pieces of which are shown in this exhibition, were originally shown in Phnom Penh in 2011. In these works Heng uses a singular photographic image of himself which he then uses as a building block to create a larger, aggregated self image of himself. The artist then attacks this aggregated self image by scraping and cutting it, burning it, and dripping paint on it to create a powerful tableau.
Heng earned a BA in Painting, Royal University of Fine Art, Phnom Penh, 2006 and was a founding member of the art collective Stiev Selapak.Click here to view Heng Ravuth's biography
